Provost Lecture - Andrew Revkin: Which Comes First: Peak Everything or Peak Us?

After a day of Earthstock festivities, Andrew Revkin, a New York Times reporter and author of the Dot Earth blog, spoke about his experiences and new environmental issues we face today. Revkin said that the greenhouse gasses being emitted in China and India through the coming decades are going to negate what small gains we might get here if we are proactive. Revkin said that in the 21st century we have to become engaged. In addition, scientists need to communicate "more creatively and aggressively." According to Revkin, scientists and sociologists need to work together to learn about us as a species. After Revkin graduated from Brown with a biology degree and received a fellowship to study "Man's Relationship to the Sea," he went to a village in French Polynesia where there was no television and the people, according to Revkin, existed in a cultural vacuum. But when he went back ten years later in 1988, they had television and phones, and were moving to the city. At first, he wanted to tell them not to go, but he realized it was not his place to interfere with their decisions. This journey made him want to be a journalist. Revkin also touched upon some of the hurdles that are experienced in a newsroom, specifically when competing for a story on the front page. "A newsroom is like a jungle," Revkin said. Anti-matter Reactor

We currently have no practical way to harness anti-matter into a bomb and can only isolate anti-matter in a particle accelerator and store it for a short time. The power source is a reactor. Inside the reactor, element 115 is bombarded with a proton, which plugs into the nucleus of the 115 atom and becomes element 116, which immediately decays and releases or radiates small amounts of anti-matter. The anti-matter is released in a vacuum into a tuned tube, which keeps it from reacting with the matter that surrounds it. It is then directed toward the gaseous matter target at the end of the tube. The matter, which in this case is the gas, and the anti-matter, collide and annihilate totally converting to energy. The heat from this reaction is converted into electrical energy in a near one hundred percent efficient thermoelectric generator. This is a device that converts heat directly into electrical energy. Many of our satellites and space probes use thermoelectric generators, but their efficiency is very, very low.

Vintage tube radio with MP3 AM-band transmitter

This is a vintage tube radio I bought off eBay, refurbished and gave to my wife as a birthday present. It's a 5-tube, 1937 Emerson AL130. A small PCB AM transmitter was built from scratch and clips to the radio's antenna. This effectively gives the radio a 1/8" audio-in that can be connected to any device (like the iPod Shuffle I used here). As an added bonus, I pre-loaded the MP3 player with over 8 hours of radio programming (music, drama, commercials, and war-time news bulletins, etc.) from 1937-1950. The Shuffle is perfectly suited for this task since it is a simple On/Off operation and randomly runs through the play list just like a DJ would. Sorghum Syrup

YouTube user HORTICULTUREVIDEOS presents a fast and easy way to make Sorghum Syrup. Sorghum syrup is easy to make and it is delicious. In this clip we are using the PITEBA oil extractor to press the juice out of the sorghum stalks. Sorghum stalks can be juiced and boiled down into syrup. To make sorghum syrup, we'll first need to mash, crush or press the juice out of the stalks. This could be done with an electric juice extractor or a wheat-grass juicer. We're using an oil extractor which is similar to a wheat-grass juicer. Hand powered tools are great for learning about the basic mechanics of bigger machines. Small pieces of cane are fed into the juicer while the crank is turning. A green juice will begin flow out of the sorghum stems. At this stage the juice is already quite sweet and aromatic. The crushed canes or "cake" can then be composted, fed to animals, or soaked in hot water to extract more sugar. Now we can simmer down the sorghum juice on a stove top. Pour the juice in a pot and set the burner on medium high. Small bubbles and steam will rise from the liquid. The water is carried away with the steam and syrup will form as the sugar gets more concentrated. We need to stir the thickening juice regularly to keep the syrup from burning. As soon as the liquid drips slowly like syrup we can turn off the heat. Keep in mind that the syrup will get thicker as it cools down. Pour the syrup off into a glass jar. We can also cap the syrup while it's still hot. This will ...

Custom Homebuilt Super Nintendo Portable

This is a fully custom SNESp (Super NES portable) that I built back during my Freshman year at college. Inspired by Benjamin Heckendorn's work, I tried to include everything on this one. It uses a large-style motherboard (the big one) coupled to a Sony PSOne 5" screen with RGB connections. The RGB video is way better than the composite connection most people use when modding this stuff. The big-@$$ Sony NP-F960 battery on it in the video can run Super Mario World for about 6 hrs. Honestly, I've gotten tired of playing before running it dead. I usually use the lightweight small NP-F550 batteries. The case was a custom design of my own using a technique called vacuum forming. The SNES motherboard can be turned off independently (shown in the video) so another input can be displayed on the screen, such as a DVD player or whatever has Composite video. The backlight is a cold-cathode bulb with lightbox pulled from a 4" screen of unknown origin. It uses about half as much power as the original screen's backlight. And yes, I am that person of the same name from the BenHeck Portable Forums all those years ago.

ENIAC: The First Computer

The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, or ENIAC, was created under the direction of John Mauchly and J. The MIC100 is great for eliminating the "dull" sound of standard digital recorders and sound cards. And thanks to onboard +48 V phantom power and 20dB pad, it can also add warmth to condenser microphones. When used as a high-end DI box, you get outstanding signal integrity.
